Lecture & Demo by Tom Lockhart

Tom Lockhart, signature member of the Oil Painters of America, and a plein air painter, was the judge for this year’s Look at Colorado! show. Lockhart provided a lecture and demonstration on June 23, after he judged the show.

After beginning with a loose linear sketch, Lockhart began adding solid shapes, gradually eliminating the white canvas. He referred to 2 photos for his initial sketch.

Here Lockhart has finished the clouds. He has left the white of the canvas where there will be snow.

After suggesting the background trees, Lockhart added detail to the darker foreground trees. He detailed the foreground and added blue shadows to the snow in the background.
