CLAY CONTINUUM VI

A fine selection of delectable things to eat at the opening reception
Be sure to pick up some clay tumblers. A donation of $5 or more per tumbler provides funds for the awards given in the show. All the tumblers are done by the founders of the Clay Continuum, Polly, Nicole, and Lori.
Make your own seed balls! A mixture of clay, flower seeds, and soil to make little clay birds. Take a clay bird and make a new one to leave for someone else. Put the seed ball in the ground and water (if it doesn't rain). Then watch the flowers grow!
Bezoar seed ball birds
These lovely birds made with unfired clay are hollow inside and contain seed balls. They can either be placed in the ground to await nature's moisture to release the seeds or may be broken to speed up the process. MERIT AWARD

The original concept for this show was the idea of local potter Polly Harris. After convincing potters Nicole Copel and Lori Hannan that La Veta needed an all ceramic show, the three began to meet for coffee and conversation in early 2006. Polly, Nicole, and Lori began to dream up ideas for the show, wanting the visitors of the gallery to see the diversity of ceramic art that was being produced regionally. They wanted to give clay artists another venue to show their work and also hoped to encourage beginners and seasoned artists alike to experiment with this three-dimensional art form, pushing the boundaries. The dream began to materialize when the SPACe Gallery in La Veta scheduled the first Clay Continuum Show. That first show was well attended and highly praised. The Clay Continuum has now become one of the most highly anticipated and successful shows of the summer season. Visitors to the town now expect not only beautiful mountain views, fresh air, and a small town ambiance, but also a thriving artist community, a growing part of which is the Clay Continuum Exhibition. To encourage education in the clay arts, local gallery and clay studio, Piñon Hill Pottery, offers classes and summer workshops at 221 N. Main St. in La Veta.
Since that first Clay Continuum exhibition, Mary Daly has come on board as a show organizer, and each year the group hopes to make the show even better. The number of participating clay artists has increased each year. The annual event is now a juried show with cash awards. This year’s judge and juror is acclaimed Colorado clay artist Nancy Utterback. Always aiming to improve the quality and diversity of the show, accepted pieces include wheel-thrown and hand-built pieces, porcelain and stoneware, functional, sculptural and purely decorative, whimsical and sophisticated—something for everyone's taste and all of it representing some of the best clay art being produced in the region. This is a show you won't want to miss.
For over 30 years the SPACe (Spanish Peaks Art Council) Gallery has been the venue of choice for South-Central Colorado artists. The SPACe Board of Directors has reached their highly anticipated goal of a gallery expansion, which has been under way in 2011. The gallery has included more classroom and exhibition space to encourage outreach beyond the immediate region and into Northern New Mexico and beyond.
